Apple Halts Integration of Meta's AI Models Over Privacy Concerns, Report Says
Apple has decided not to integrate Meta’s AI models due to privacy concerns, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Talks between Apple and Meta took place in March, but Apple dropped the idea, worried about privacy issues and its reputation, given its criticism of Meta's privacy practices.
Instead, Apple launched its own AI features under the Apple Intelligence brand and partnered with OpenAI to use ChatGPT for certain queries. Apple also announced at the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) that it would work with Google to use the Gemini AI model.
Meanwhile, Meta has released its AI chatbot, Meta AI, to users in India, using its platforms like Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, and Messenger. Read more.
Google Reportedly Developing Influencer and Custom Chatbots
Google is reportedly developing a platform for personalized chatbots to rival Meta and Character.AI. According to sources from The Information, users will be able to create their own chatbots or interact with celebrity-themed bots, with potential integration into YouTube.
The chatbots will be powered by Google's Gemini AI model, and the project is led by Ryan Germick, a designer at Google Labs known for creating Google Doodles. The platform could launch later this year. While Character.AI has achieved success with highly personalized chatbots, particularly among younger users, Meta's celebrity chatbots have not gained significant traction since their release in late 2023.
Google's move to develop influencer and custom chatbots reflects its strategy to leverage its AI expertise and large user base to compete in the growing chatbot market. Read more.
Record Labels Sue AI Music Generator Startups Suno, Udio for Copyright Infringement
Major record labels, including Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and Warner Music Group, have jointly filed lawsuits against AI music generation platforms Suno and Udio for alleged copyright infringement. The lawsuits, coordinated with the Record Industry Association of America (RIAA), claim that both platforms have used AI to create music that closely mimics copyrighted songs without obtaining proper licenses.
Suno and Udio allow users to input text prompts to generate audio clips, leading to accusations that their AI models are trained on copyrighted music, including specific songs and artist styles. The complaint against Suno highlights instances where its AI allegedly produced outputs reminiscent of well-known songs like "Johnny B. Goode," owned by Universal Music Group. Similarly, Udio is accused of facilitating the distribution of AI-generated music that imitates copyrighted recordings on commercial platforms like Spotify. Read more.
OpenAI Launches ChatGPT App for Mac, Delays Release of More Advanced Chat Capabilities
OpenAI has released the official ChatGPT app for Apple Mac computers running macOS Sonoma or later. It is now accessible to all users, having been previously exclusive to ChatGPT Plus subscribers. The app enables direct desktop interaction with ChatGPT, eliminating the necessity for a browser.
Users can choose from various models, including GPT-3.5, GPT-4, and the advanced GPT-4o, as well as specialized versions like the DALL-E image generator. However, it currently lacks support for the official OpenAI API. The app features system-wide keyboard shortcuts for quick access.
Despite the launch, OpenAI has delayed the rollout of the advanced voice mode, initially announced in May, due to ongoing safety and reliability improvements. The voice feature, now expected later this summer, will allow users to engage in voice conversations with the chatbot. The ChatGPT Mac app can be downloaded from OpenAI's website, although it is not yet available on the Mac App Store. Read more.
ElevenLabs Launches iOS App That Turns 'any' Text Into Audio Narration With AI
ElevenLabs debuts "ElevenLabs Reader: AI Audio," their maiden iOS app that transforms text into engaging spoken narratives using AI. Ideal for multitaskers who prefer auditory immersion while commuting, cooking, or evading paparazzi, the app initially supports English with promises of a polyglot future encompassing over 29 languages. It boasts features like adjustable playback speeds (0.8x to 2x) and a symphony of 11 diverse voices and accents, from American to Austrian.
Seamless content import from Safari is facilitated through iOS Share Sheet integration. While the app excels at narrating various text formats, some early trials revealed minor PDF formatting issues. A question mark remains regarding data privacy policies, as users await further clarification on ElevenLabs' security measures. Read more.
