DARPA Just Unveiled An AI-powered Autonomous Tank

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) continues to advance its autonomous tank program through the Robotic Autonomy in Complex Environments with Resiliency (RACER) initiative.

The RACER program recently introduced a new vehicle, the RACER Heavy Platform (RHP), a 12-ton tracked vehicle, complementing the existing wheeled RACER Fleet Vehicles (RFVs). This demonstrates the adaptability and scalability of the RACER algorithms across different platforms.

Phase 2 of the program aims to improve autonomous vehicle performance across varied terrains. Experiments in military training areas in Texas tested the vehicles' performance on diverse terrains, achieving over 150 autonomous miles at speeds up to 30 mph. The RHP also completed 30 miles in an autonomous route-following mode, gathering valuable data.

The RACER program aims to continue its progress through biannual experiments, enhancing adaptability across multiple scales and environments. The program builds on DARPA's Grand Challenge legacy, pushing the boundaries of autonomous vehicles in complex off-road settings.

Teams including the University of Washington, Overland AI, and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory support the program, ensuring the continued development of autonomous ground vehicles for military applications. Read More

Apple Eyes OpenAI And Google Partnerships To Bring Generative AI To iPhone In iOS 18

Apple is currently engaged in negotiations with both OpenAI and Google to integrate generative AI capabilities into the upcoming iOS 18, with the objective of enhancing iPhone features. Talks with OpenAI have recently resumed, focusing on the potential utilization of the startup's technology within forthcoming iOS iterations.

Concurrently, discussions are ongoing with Google regarding the licensing of the Gemini chatbot. Apple's decision-making process regarding partnership agreements is still underway, with the possibility of engaging with either or both companies, or potentially another entity altogether.

Tesla Unveils First Look At Robotaxi Ride-hailing App

Tesla revealed a sneak peek of its upcoming Robotaxi-enabled ride-hailing app, showcased through five screens during its recent earnings report. The app, designed for smartphones, features familiar elements like a "Summon" button and estimated wait times, along with a 3D map displaying the virtual vehicle's route. Passengers can adjust climate settings and view trip details while awaiting their ride, with further options available for music selection upon pickup.

CEO Elon Musk likened Tesla's role in managing the Robotaxi fleet to a hybrid of Airbnb and Uber, with both company-owned and customer-owned vehicles contributing to the service. Musk reaffirmed Tesla's commitment to autonomy during the earnings call, emphasizing the company's vision for a scalable and profitable autonomy venture.
